what is in a name?

With us having to find a name for our son, I started looking deeper into names & I believe that there is so much more locked up in a name…

According to the Oxford dictionary the definition of a name is
– a word or set of words by which a person or thing is known, addressed, or referred to.
& the definition of a surname is
– a hereditary name common to all members of a family, as distinct from a forename or given name.

Delving a bit deeper, a good place to start is to look at the history of names. When it comes to names, they were there from the start of creation. Names were given to reflect something of significance or to describe the course of the life to be lived. In biblical times they didn’t have surnames, but were however referred to as the son or daughter of.

With surnames it is interesting… It became popular in the Roman Empire & expanded throughout the Mediterranean & Western Europe as a result. During the early Middle Ages the practice of surnames died out & reemerged gradually at the end of the Middle Ages. First in the form of bynames indicating occupation or a place of residence. Then it developed gradually into what we know it as today. Surnames / family names / last names as we know it is indicative of a person’s family / tribe / community.

The family name is usually placed after the given name, however there are countries & cultures where the family name is placed before the person’s given name. Just one of the little things indicating that different cultures have different naming practices.

When it comes to giving names to children, things can be quite interesting… As to who has input & ultimately who has the final say. We saw even in our own family how important carrying on family names is to certain family members. HOWEVER, we’ve decided to do things just a little different…

We know that a name has power – as with your name, life & purpose is spoken over your life! Proverbs 22 vs 1 states “A good name [earned by Honorable behaviour, godly wisdom, moral courage, and personal integrity] is more desirable than great riches; And favour is better than silver and gold.” Therefor we started out with the meanings that we want to bless our son with & searched for names with those specific meanings! For we know that every time your name is spoken, that which is locked up in its meaning is spoken out over your life.

May you now understand & know that Your name carries weight…
It speaks life & destiny over you!
It proclaims your identity!!

– ALL SYSTEMS ARE GO!!

We know that you are in God’s hands & we trust in His perfect timing for your arrival!!

Our bags are packed (well, almost… there is still some essentials needing to be thrown in), the big wash has taken place (almost everything in your closet have been washed) & we’re excitedly waiting for you now!

Dad jokes about the fact that every time I want to kiss him, I either get stretched out or a shot in the ribs… At least you’re allowing him to hold us both (with his hand on you – & you’re showing him your movements).
Although the bubble is starting to feel a little bit uncomfortable, I know it is best for you to make the most of your time in the bubble!

Development & growth wise we know the following…
– @ 37 weeks you’re considered early term
– your head (although it is still growing) is as big as your chest…
– technically you are ready to be born
– now is your dress rehearsal time
– you’re still brushing up on your coordination by practising finger grasping & thumb sucking
– you’re gaining fat continually to regulate your temperature & keep your blood sugar levels even

Just a little something… Our excitement over you is growing daily!

The BIGGEST thing we need you to know in all of this is that you are LOVED & WANTED & we are extremely excited about you!

The topsy turvy madness of the world wide pandemic has not subsided & the South African lockdown has been extended. Life as we knew it has changed & we’re all gearing up for a new normal (even though I’m not sure what that would entail).

We know the grandparents are complaining just a bit about all the uncertainty regarding the lockdown… with none of us being sure how long the lockdown will continue & when they’ll actually be able to come visit.

At least we know that all is going well with your growth & progress. We saw our midwife on Monday & she was truly excited about your progress so far. We’re seeing her again in 2 weeks (unless you decide to make your appearance earlier).

Talking about growth & progress, we know by week 36 the following developments have taken place…
– your blood circulation has been perfected
– your immune system has developed well enough to survive outside of the womb
– your hearing is extra sharp
– your head is starting to burrow deeper into mom’s pelvis
– your skull & bones are not fused together yet to be able to manoeuvre through the birth canal

Somehow it still feels unreal that we’ve got about a month left until your expected due date. I can say we’ve set up your baby station corner. & we’re starting to get everything ready for you! (although your name is still under construction).

The BIGGEST thing we need you to know in all of this is that you are LOVED & WANTED & we are extremely excited about you!

It seems lockdown is affecting everyone differently & even just how everyone is also dealing with it all. We’re seeing it within our own group of friends. We do however know that we’re excited about you!

This week mom had to take a little break each day & count your movements… Seems as if you knew exactly what time to disrupt the ‘normal’ counting with hiccups. & your hiccups were rather interesting as it made mom’s whole body shake (something dad found very funny & the cat just stared as you interrupted her cuddle space). She loves to cuddle right next to where you are, until you start moving about & then we get the death stare… We (or rather mom) believe that the two of you will end up being rather good friends!.

Mom is however getting a little bit of cabin fever, at least we’re seeing the midwife this coming Monday! & we’ll get to see you on the screen again as well! It is exciting to see your growth & development each time & knowing that your time inside the womb is coming to an end… If all goes to plan, we just have a month before we see you face to face!

Talking about development & growth, by week 35 the following is where we stand
– your growth starts to plateau a bit
– most of your basic physical development is complete
– your kidneys & liver are now in working order
– the majority of your growth from here on out is now basically gaining fat
– your brainpower is also still developing at a mind boggling pace
– it has now also become time where you’ll start turning into position with your head down
– your skull remains soft to allow squeezing more easily through the birthing canal.

Knowing that we basically have a month left before your arrival, there is still a lot to do at home! Which includes finalising our birthplan, finding you a name & setting up our ‘baby safe’ home.

The BIGGEST thing we need you to know is that you are LOVED & WANTED & we are extremely excited about you!

our dearest darling WolfPup

Sitting in lockdown has made me think of all sorts of things… Of how not much has really changed for us as we’re still working from home on our business (on different projects as well as on each other’s nerves even if only a little bit). BUT, how it has affected the society around us.

We saw the gynea on Monday, or rather, mom had to see the gynea alone on Monday. The Hospital’s precautionary measures are such that when you enter (& only the patient may enter), you’re sanitzed & scanned for a fever & if the all clear is given you may enter & go to your appointment. The doc was happy with your progress & growth, but I do think a bit sad about handing us over to the midwives to complete this pregnancy journey of ours… Unfortunately we could not get a decent photo of you this time around, but it was still good to see you on screen!

Knowing that you’re growing & making good progress is stirring excitement in our hearts. & we know the following developments have taken place by week 34…
– (something about mom & not you) the combined length of blood vessels in mom’s placenta is about 51.5km…
– you’re more settled into your own rhythm, into your own cycles of rest & being active
– you’re sucking much more, I guess I should rather say practising to latch onto mom’s boob
– your fat layers regulating body temperature are filling out more now
– you’re taking up much more space & therefor your movements are much more pronounced
– the vernix caseosa is thickening, keeping your skin soft & supple
– the lunago (those downy hair covering your body) is disappearing now
– you’re seeing red, your first colour inside mom’s uterus
– your testicles are making their way down from your abdomen to your scrotum (in dad’s words – your balls are dropping son)

& as the lockdown has also been extended we know there will be some interesting times ahead & that God will provide – He has blessed us with so much for you already & we know we’re in His hands!

The BIGGEST thing we need you to know is that you are LOVED & WANTED & we are extremely excited about you!
